Sarah, Heifer International is a neat charity. My daughter has a pet guinea pig and she had trouble with the idea that people in S. America eat them ;-)

OK. You have hit on one of my favorite topics.... National Groups that you should learn about:
National Center for Family Literacy www.famlit.org We MOST have an educated population if we are going to have a fair democracy. Also if we want to fix our problems we must have an empowered population. The Family Literacy Program is the best place to start.
Here are a few other national groups that deserve your time to see what they are about.

I really like Heifer International. You can donate money in the name of another person or business. I prefer this "gift" rather than sending Christmas card to clients and friends. http://www.heifer.org/

My two favorite Charities are : Christin Children Funds http://www.christianchildrensfund.org/Default.aspx and Plan USA http://www.planusa.org/sponsorachild/ I always have given to both and highly encourage everyone that I know to consider either one.
