My daughters both donate to a charity called "What Matters Most". An orphanage in Central America!

If you ever want to learn about philanthropy. The Chronicle of Philanthropy: The Newspaper of the Nonprofit World... Is the paper with who's who and what's what if you would like to learn more about what to look for in your donations.

Sarah, Heifer International is a neat charity. My daughter has a pet guinea pig and she had trouble with the idea that people in S. America eat them ;-)

OK. You have hit on one of my favorite topics.... National Groups that you should learn about:
National Center for Family Literacy www.famlit.org We MOST have an educated population if we are going to have a fair democracy. Also if we want to fix our problems we must have an empowered population. The Family Literacy Program is the best place to start.
Here are a few other national groups that deserve your time to see what they are about.
AmericanIndependentBusinessAlliance http://amiba.net/
Any of the Climate Change organizations. Here is just one example. www.wecansolveit.org

Local Groups that you should check out.
Community Radio Station KOPN, 89.5fm, www.kopn.org
Columbia Garden Coalition
Columbia Farmers Market
Pheniox House
Columbia Center for the Arts and the Columbia Art League

So many great causes.... So much to learn...

I really like Heifer International. You can donate money in the name of another person or business. I prefer this "gift" rather than sending Christmas card to clients and friends.

My two favorite Charities are :
Christin Children Funds http://www.christianchildrensfund.org/Default.aspx

and

Plan USA
http://www.planusa.org/sponsorachild/

I always have given to both and highly encourage everyone that I know to consider either one.
