Boxes are miraculous inventions that are not just used solely for storage purposes. Our society is very wasteful, so do your part. After moving and storage here are some uses for extra boxes you have lying around.

At home storage- Storing food, files, toys, records etc.

Miscellaneous uses in the home- constructing a bed tray, end tables, and nightstands, shields for doors and furniture when staining or painting, placemats, protecting glasses and lights, collage bases, notebooks and scrapbooks

Toys- Clubhouse or fort, tunnels to crawl through, dollhouse, constructing cardboard cars, picture frame, sled down the stairs or snow if applicable

For animals- Tunnels for cats, ferrets and other small animals, throw away cat litter boxes, chew toys for small rodents

Moving-Transporting dishes, glassware, papers, small miscellaneous items

School- Files, books, papers, storage of personal items, extra storage space or small room or office

Holidays- Hiding Christmas gifts, using the boxes to hold presents, creating gift wrap suspense, storing away Halloween and Christmas décor

Send it to be recycled

These are just a few uses for boxes that are no longer needed for moving and storing.

Just thinking about the Great Depression makes me realize that although we are in a recession things could be worse. The country does not seem to learn from its mistakes, but many of her citizens seem to learn by experience and example and plan accordingly. Storage becomes a major issue when looking at the current economic situation because in my opinion the country’s citizens are struggling and are in need for self storage at home.

In my immediate family we have learned to save what we have, because there is no guarantee how much we will have in the future. We are not poor by any means, but like many middle class families money is tight. The holidays are in the near future and money will be applied to credit cards, groceries and Christmas gifts. Food is a prime example of what needs to be stored during hard times. When we go grocery shopping, we shop in bulks and store the rest in plastic containers or in the pantry. These consist of non perishable food items and water. We have also been storing our Christmas gifts in a secret hideaway. Buying early and searching for sales will be important this year when thinking about that special someone in your life.

It is tight, but it is right if your heart is there. So go ahead, save and shop and be sure to allocate funds accordingly. Storage can help you achieve a happy holiday season.

When can excellent customer service no longer be attainable because of one customer and their issue? Working in a customer service field can be difficult depending on the customer and their problem. Handling irate customers may be the most difficult aspect of working in a customer service based environment. Previously, I dealt with a customer that was so irate I was forced to call law enforcement. I was being verbally abused and threatened because I could not achieve the result the customer requested.

Many times when a customer feels that you can do more on your part to fix their issue they become irate. In self storage , and other customer service occupations, one important detail in helping this customer is to listen to what they want and find the best way to accommodate them. It listened attentively and let the customer know what I could do, and still I was faced with opposition until I could no longer stand the abuse. With those customers, it is better for someone else to attempt to handle the situation once you have exhausted all of your resources. In self storage, another property manager may need to handle the issue. Remember, don’t take every issue personally.

My friend is moving out of a room and needs a place to store her furniture for a while.  I mentioned that she should rent a storage unit for a few months, just until she finds another place to stay. She gives me excuses on why she should just throw her furniture away before she rents a storage unit . She said that it would cost too much, that she would have to drive a distance to get anything she needs, and how she did not want any critters in her storage unit .

Luckily, for her I used my tools learned as a storage specialist to explain to her the benefits of renting a self storage unit . In order to help her understand I offered to attend a site visit to a local storage unit and to her surprise she changed her mind, and decided to store her items for two months and paid in advance. Two weeks later she is pleased she took my advice.

Don’t knock it before you try it.

It is feeling more and more like fall everyday.  Leaves are turning a beautiful shade of red, yellow and orange. The temperature is falling constantly while rain increases significantly. While anticipating the fall of snow one may question the difficulty of moving during the winter and fall months. Anyone deciding to move at some stage in the fall and winter needs to follow these tips. Find a storage facility that is easily accessible in the rain and snow. Plan your move in advanced and if possible hire a moving company which will limit your time enduring the elements. Pack all boxes and furniture in advance and move them as close to the exit as possible to allow for a speedy move. If doing the moving yourself, dress warm and use gloves to keep your hands warm and safe. If you adhere these few tips, anyone moving in the winter months will have a better time during a stressful occasion.

For some reason I tend to gravitate to careers in customer service and react when I do not receive the customer service that I should. Currently, while working in the position I am in as a manager for sales and customer service I make sure that all customers are greeted with a smile and given excellent customer service. However, not all customer service managers value the amount of customer service that their employees provide. My coworkers know my standpoint in giving customer service but they believe that as long as they complete their physical work and greet customers as they walk in they are doing their jobs. I have been retraining and showing by example how customer should always be treated.

1.       Greet all customers with a smile upon entering and do not discriminate

2.       Always ask the customer how you can better serve their needs

3.       If they customer is looking for a specific item, assist them with no hesitation and offer suggestions on their purchase

4.       Always thank the customer for coming in (even if they do not make a purchase) and offer them to return

These few tasks should always be done with every customer and if not the associates have learned they will have consequences. Even in the self storage industry these tasks must be completed to gain rentals and customers for the company.

As you all know I no longer work in the call center for self storage, but surprisingly I really miss it. You would think that after two years of discussing storage with more than fifty people per day and working full time one would be tired of storage. It is funny that every time I pass a self storage facility I always inquire about their features and security. I want to know what they offer and their prices. Hopefully, I am able to reenter the storage industry and continue to assist others in their search for storage.

Working in a customer service industry is not a difficult job if you know how to deal with the public. However, not everyone is cut out for a customer service job. Like this woman at McDonalds…She was the worst I have ever seen. We were in the drive thru for about ten minutes before we could order and after we drove up to the screen to order we immediately knew we should have went to another fast food place. The first thing the woman said to us is, “What do you want”? I being the most outspoken of the bunch replied, “Excuse me?” She responded by repeating herself again in the same rude tone of voice. My friends ordered and I drove up to the window where the woman was talking to a guy in the in front of us car that never ordered. So after five minutes of waiting on them talk I blew my horn. The guy yells some profanity at us and my friends yells back. This situation turned from bad to worse quick. So, after I open my door the guy in the car in front of us drives away and I pull up to the window. The woman just looks at me with these evil beady eyes, and her hair standing on end. This evil stare lasts at least thirty seconds until I ask what my total was. She rolls her eyes at me and says, “I am helping somebody else. You have to wait.” I was livid, and drove away very angry. Not only did the company lose about $25 in food they also lost customers. I should have called and complained to the manager, but I was too angry at the time and decided against it. I had better things to do with the rest of my evening, like going to an enhanced restaurant. Even in self storage an associate has to be conscious of how they treat their customers, if they want them to return, or refer people to their company. This restaurant will never get anymore of my money.

During my trip to the beautiful, wealthy state of Florida I noticed that everything along the coast is centralized around the water. Beaches are popular hangout spots for the young and old and there are vendors, shops and malls everywhere you look. While standing on the beach you look out to millions of miles of a gorgeous blue ocean, and if you look to the left and right you see miles of light brown sand that feels amazing to the bare feet. Looking opposite of the ocean there are many shops that sell everything from ice cream to crab legs, which is my favorite combination of food. The night life is amazing. Although, on many parts of the beach itself there is a curfew, there is none for the many clubs that party all night long. No wonder this state draws so many people for spring break year after year. Just imagine if you lived less than five miles from the beautiful blue water, in a house that costs more than a private plane with your own two story yacht. You could walk to the beach if you wanted, or just walk out to the yacht and take a day long trip away from the everyday stressors of life. My only question is where one would store their yacht during the winter and hurricane season? During my trip it was summertime and hot, if there was no breeze, so the yachts were docked right outside people’s homes. Do they stay there all year around? I would think there would be some sort of storage facility that would house the boats, but then again it does not get extremely cold in Florida during the winter. I guess this is another topic I can research.  Boat storage should be a interesting thing to think about.

I am very interested in traveling. I want to travel so badly that I watch the travel channel on a daily basis just to visualize myself in the places that they are showing. I want to travel all over the world to see how other cultures live. I have always wondered if other countries had storage units like the United States. If so, are they made the same way? Do they have climate controlled units in the warmer counties? What about in counties like Germany, China and Ireland? Since China is so overpopulated, they have to have some type of storage for the belongings of the millions of people that reside in that country. I guess that is something I will have to research along with the trips I want to plan.

The major cell phone companies are a trip. You spend an enormous amount of money on using a small device that can do about fifty different things, and there is really no good use for it besides talking and texting for me. I pay close to $100 dollars a month on a phone that I only talk and text on about five times out of the day. I guess working on the phones all day, talking about storage and furniture can wear you out. I think that although cell phones can make your life easier it also can make it difiicult. With technology these days anyone can contact you anywhere you are. Maybe I am from the just old school.

My little brother and sister have to abide by strict rules when it comes to cleanliness and organization. I guess you can say that my mom and step father are neat freaks. Now they are nine and eleven respectively, and of course like other children do not like to clean everyday, however they are to clean their rooms before they go to school in the morning. I was instructed by my stepfather to inspect the rooms this morning and got a tickle out of the organization of these children. My little brother’s room seemed to be clean when I first walked in, but as a looked a little closer I noticed that there was something sticking out of his closet. As I went to open the door cars and figurines fell out onto the floor out of his toy storage bin. I thought this was hilarious because he is so spoiled with toys, they cannot fit into this storage bin, and clothes were under these toys. So apparently he was in a rush and decided to throw everything into this storage bin. I straightened it up for him, and of course did not inform my stepfather of this ordeal. I then proceeded to enter my younger sister’s room to find the door locked. Now, it is difficult to lock doors in the house unless you are in them, because there is not a key to them, but I saw a nickel on the floor under the door and used that to open it. Vey very slick, that child is. So, I proceeded to enter and her room looked immaculate, but again I opened the closet door and most of her clothes in the closet were thrown about. Again, I saved her from a world of trouble and just organized them in a presentable manner. I am not going to tell on them because their father would pitch a fit, and my other sister and I used to do the same things when we were their age. But I imagine that my parents know by now, you can’t fool them.

With limited time to eat at home, I have been eating out lately and noticed a few things about restaurants. Now, I really do not like eating out at all, because it is unbelievably fattening and of course is not better than home cooked food, but when you are on the go, it is tempting not to. Have you ever wondered how the food is shipped to restaurants and where it is stored? An associate of one restaurant informed me that mostly all foods that are cooked are processed, frozen, shipped and then warmed to eat. I continued to inquire about this process and I found some startling facts. Number one, they are stored in boxes, mostly cardboard boxes. Now if you have every worked about cardboard boxes you would know that they aren’t the cleanest paper product in the world. They are made in factories by the combining of chemicals such as bentonite, methacrylamide and more, and then drained on a wire. Now this all depends on the thickness of the cardboard in question, and typically when storing frozen food products they use thick cardboard to prevent it from tearing.  My whole issue with storing food in cardboard is that factories are very unclean, and cardboard has a tendency to flake off when the temperature is fluctuating. I think they need to find new ways of transporting and storing food.

It is often difficult to tell just by visualizing the amount of furniture and boxes you have just by looking around your house. When renting a storage unit it is important to determine a size that will fit all of your items with enough room to maneuver throughout if needed. There are few tips however, that can make your size determining task simpler. Number one, pack the majority of boxes up and set then in one area to establish the amount of room that is needed for the boxes alone. Then, survey the size of the furniture being stored and determine if it will fit comfortably in a room in your house. Next, go visit a storage facility in your area and tour the rooms to help you visualize how your items will fit in the units. Then, ask a storage specialist their opinion of the amount of room needed. Make sure that if it too large or small that they are willing to allow you to relocate to another size. Finally, upon your move, after roughly choosing a size, start moving items in, and about ¼ of the way done see how much room that is left in the storage unit. If you decide then that you will need more room, inform the storage associate in advanced so that they are given ample time to exchange the unit and transfer your paperwork. These are just a few tips to make moving and storing easier.

While shopping online for new furniture and home accents I found that moving of course is expensive, but the price of all furniture has gone up significantly. Then after you purchase your furniture you have to consider storage options if the transition is gradual. Furniture storage is fairly easy to find and not very costly at all depending on the length of time it is in use. The shorter the time limit, the cheaper the price of storage will be. Self storage can be found by flipping through everyday television commercials, listening to the radio, during your normal internet surfing, or just by opening up your local yellow pages. Look for the closest storage facility in your area and then do research on the facility. Find what fits your needs and go from there. Finding transportation for the items being moved or stored is another issue. The majorities of fairly large storage facilities either has transportation options or have a drop off area for trucks and vans. If your financial situation is like mine, then you would think to yourself, should I buy new furniture, or move into my new place. It’s a difficult decision, but everything will come in due time.

Traveling can be the most relaxing activity next to fishing for those who are stressed out about this economically struggling country. I recently went to Elgin Illinois for a visit.  Some of my family lives in Elgin Illinois so it is nice to go there when I can.  In everyday life there is always something to worry or stress about. If it is not financial issues then its, family, friends, or an automobile or maybe even moving. By taking a break from the everyday stressors you gain the ability to regroup, relax, and plan your next move. In my opinion, life is like a game of chess in which you have a plan to win, or achieve a goal or dream, and its all about your next move how the end will turn out. So by taking time off from the stressful game of life and chance you can plan which pawn to move.

While planning a trip itself can be stressful, the rewards of taking the much needed break can ease the pain a slightly. There are many things that go into planning a large vacation or trip, especially if the trip is more than a weekend. Personally, I am planning my first trip to the Ozarks for a week during the winter, and the major issue of course is money, and car storage room. We plan on driving, but being a woman I know that I cannot manage to fit all of clothes and accessories into two suitcases. I am going to need at least three, not included my shoe bag. So I think our quick solution is to work as hard as possible until the trip in order to save enough money to be comfortable and to purchase storage supplies that would assist us on our trip. We are planning on buying rope, scissors, tape, and bubble wrap for the souvenirs. All of which we plan on purchasing at a storage facility. I hope this goes well.

The more I drive around the city of St. Louis, the more I see unnoticed and portable storage units and facilities throughout the area. When I was in Olathe Kansas I didnt see anything like this.  Stl and Olathe Kansas are very different places!  Before I worked in the storage industry I never really paid much attention to any storage facilities unless they were extremely extravagant and stood out. Like the one right off Highway 70. It is very large, about five stories and there are many windows, and the building is painted in yellow and purple. It is very noticeable right? Now, I see that there is storage everywhere. I was just recently driving down a well traveled road when I noticed a portable storage unit from a specific company and about seven houses down from that was the same brand. Just by visualizing this advertising is a very important part of the storage industry. Many people, like the neighbors that resided on the busy road, possibly heard about the portable storage units through word of mouth. Television advertisements are very effective as well, with most of the country viewing the television at least four hours out of the day.  The radio is also a very reliable advertisement strategy, because while driving, cleaning the house, or doing homework, the radio can and will be used. There are many more advertising techniques that are used to sell and rent storage units like flyers, internet, and yellow pages, however you never really notice places of the sort until either you work in the industry or you or someone you know needs a storage unit.

Moving supplies are definitely a hot commodity because not only could they be used for moving and storage. They can also be used around the house for everyday things. A list of moving and storage items that can be used in various ways are as follows: scissors, tape, boxes, peanuts, rope, locks, dollies, and more. Scissors are a number one asset when moving to cut tape and break down boxes. However they can be used to cut many things around the house. Boxes are a definite need when you’re moving to keep the items organized and in a movable state. Then, they can be used for organize files and store unused items, to keep the house uncluttered. Peanuts are used in moving to keep items from breaking, but they can be a cut addition to a vase, children’s art project, or for the kids to just play with. I know when we were younger we used to put all the peanuts into a box large enough that we could jump into, and play for hours on end. Rope, although used in moving to maybe hold a trunk close or grip and tie items down can too be used around the house. Take for example the swing that is broken in your backyard, very good tool to use is the rope. Many moving and storage supplies can be very versatile and be used for the basic at home needs as well as moving from location to another.

Finding a job is like looking for a storage unit in various ways. When in search for a job or career there is a research and application process that must be done to determine the type of job that would match your skills, education level and interests. Like applying for a job, when in search for a storage unit, you must determine what you would be storing and the type of facility that may be the best fit for the items you would be storing. After applying for a job and researching the company that interest you then undergo an interview process, this too is similar to determining a storage facility, however the roles are reversed. You should always visit thestorage storage facility and interview their management to find out what features and benefits that the company can offer you. After you rent you unit or obtain a job with a company you are provided with a legal document that explains the rules and regulations of the job or storage unit. There then becomes a period of trial and error where you get a feel of the company and you can determine if this is something that you want to continue. These are two are at very different ends of the spectrum but can be compared.

It is a scary process applying for Law School time. It is like you work so hard to accomplish one major goal for yourself and when you do not succeed the first time you feel like a failure. But it is important to never give up, even if you do not succeed the first time! When one realizes they are interested in attending law school there are many steps that must be achieved in order to obtain that goal. Research the school you want to apply to in depth. Learn about the schools and what they can offer you, research their statistics of graduation rates, bar passage rates, average GPA, LSAT scores and then determine how you would be a good fit for the school. Researching the school takes up a large portion of the time, because there is so much history and many programs within one school it is difficult to select what attribute stands out to you the most. After all this researching is done, there must be a six month time frame in which you must study for the LSAT, and then take the test. This gives you ample time to prepare for the test. You must also write a convincing personal statement that explains to the law school admissions panel that you are a good fit for their school. Finally, you must fill out an application of every law school pan on applying to. Not only does this process take time and lots of money it takes superior organization skills. Organizing you items can be done by separating everything into files or documents. The files may be placed in labeled boxes so you can find the material needed readily. Happy planning!

Many of us eat out on a daily basis, although we know the side effects can be dreadful and it may possible be extremely unhealthy, but how many Americans actually know what is in their food, or how its processed or stored before eating it? I would say that not many of us know or really think about our foods and where they originate, we think explicitly about the taste on our vivid taste buds, and how full the processed food will make us.

I have just recently become particularly health food conscious and it has disgusted me after reading and researching fast food. I used to eat out at least twice a week after moving back to St. Louis, because there are a variety of different restaurants to try and many different tastes and textures. If you think about the process that your food goes through before you family sits at the table for dinner your mind may to change. If the food is processed more than likely it is then stored in a storage warehouse. In warehouses there are different rodents always running around. It is then frozen and packaged and sent to the fast food restaurant and unthawed. Then someone half cooks it and you, the consumers buy it. We are injected thousands of calories and unhealthy foods into our bodies on a daily basis. Think about this before pulling up to a drive through window. Happy eating!!!

If you haven’t noticed when searching for a self storage unit online, many times you are not provided with any pricing information. This is to allow the customer to get a feel for their services offered before basing their decision solely on the price. Many times this works and people call in or go into the office to get prices. They are able to visualize their items inside the storage units and decide which services would work better for their needs. Other facilities post their prices online along with amenities and benefits of renting with the company. Companies such as California Mini Storage, Essex Self Storage, and Cheshire Self Storage all provided the online quoting services. This service is excellent to quick shoppers, but there are benefits to both types of self storage selling, but it is very important to visit each and every facility that may work for your needs to gain a sense of security, measurements, and the property management.  I was in Odenton Maryland and got a storage unit without checking the size.  None of my things would fit!  While I was in Odenton Maryland I decided to go online and found the perfect one!

What are some reasons this should be done? The number one reason is because of advertisements. It is simple to look something up online and purchase it without actually seeing it in person. However, it may be different or less impressive after seeing it in person. Just like an online dating service. You see the person’s picture online, read their profile, and then when you go to meet them, they may look, act, or appear much different than they did online. Take my advice. Go visit a self storage facility before renting even if you already have the prices.

The job market has been horrific for some months now, and it difficult for individuals to find jobs in their field.  I have a friend in Dania Beach Florida. She said she has been out of work for months, its nice to live in Dania Beach Florida, but not if you cannot find work!  This seems to be trend all over the U.S. however it appears to be different in various parts of the country. In the health and sciences field it is slightly easier to find work, because there is such a need for health care workers. With new and improved medicines people are living longer, and with pollution and other toxins that have plagued the world more people need healthcare.  Since the economy throughout the world is technologically based individuals that have a technological background are increasingly needed within the job market. The need for service jobs such as plumbers, machine operators, and others have decreased slightly and the unemployment rate for service workers have raised.

You would think that since foreclosure rates are on an incline the need for self storage would increase also, but how are people to pay for self storage without a well paying job? This a dilemma that many storage services are faced with on a daily basis, but there is evidence that shows people are still renting long and short term storage not only for their household belongings, but also for boats, RV’s campers etc. Ironic, don’t you think?

Property management and business skills need to be taught to everyone working within the property management field. Apartment rental companies should inform renters a few months prior to moving out the move out procedures in order to gain new customers, and increase or upkeep their reputations as competent apartment management. Most apartment management has been viewed in my eyes professional and detailed in leasing agreements, but there is one company that has been very deceitful to many of its renters.  When I lived in Miramar Florida things were a little better.  It seems like in Miramar Florida, the landlords keep up with everything.

Picture yourself residing in a small one bedroom apartment for two years. You pay your rent every month on time, there have been no complaints about you or the apartment, and you keep your place immaculate. However, the property management does not keep their end of the deal. They do not work on the upkeep of the complex. There are constant noise complaints about your neighbors and the facility does not appear as safe as it did prior to you moving in. Then, after you move out and are expecting a refund of your deposit you receive a notice in the mail that the deposit has been taken and you owe a $30 bill to the complex. This fee is due to not replacing burners for the stove and regular carpet cleaning that is required after every tenant moves out. Although this is discouraging I will continue to rent and research companies before I rent.

Since technology has become so advanced it is difficult for some to function in the world without it. Computers, cell phones, and other technological equipment is currently the center of the worldwide economy and for most companies to operate properly it is a necessity for these machines to be functional at all times. I predict that technology will continue to control the world for years to come. It is such a necessity that recent college graduates, like myself, are not able to complete tasks without it.

My computer, fax machine and home phone have been inoperable for roughly two weeks, and I have been going crazy. It was nearly impossible to work from home, apply for jobs, or call any companies when my phone, internet and cable service needed repair. I started to get desperate and sought the crowded library computers to check my email. Even the hour that is allocated for the public computers was not sufficient for my everyday communication needs. I eventually had to borrow my step brother’s laptop and try to gain access in the library. However, he did not have any portable storage for his laptop and threw a fit, when it began to rain. The World Wide Web has definitely stolen the innocence and hearts if the people of the world.

I really do not like being at home during the day in my parents’ home, because you are obligated to do work.  Not that they yell, complain, or force me to do chores, but it is a given that if I am at home, I need to cook, clean, help the children with their homework, or do something conducive to the house. Today, and for the majority of the week, I am to help redo the deck. Major duty! This entails a lot. The major obligation is to find some secure storage for the deck furniture. Afterwards, I must power wash the deck, and sand it, until all of the paint and staining is completely removed. Then, I have to wash it again, let it dry, and stain it. Then I must give it a day to dry and stain it a second time. Ugh! I dislike painting and staining as much as I dislike eating lima beans. That says a lot about what I think of lima beans. Then, my step dad and I are going to build self organizers that will be the same color as the deck that will house the water hose, kid’s toys etc. Finally, I will take the furniture out of storage and put it back up. I image that this will be a weeklong chore that I am not prepared for. Fun times!

The summer is finally over for children in Kindergarten through the 12th grade, and it is time to buy school supplies and school clothes for the anxious, restless children. This year my baby sister is going to the sixth grade, which is middle school, and was extremely excited. My little brother was happy because although he is going to the third grade, this is his first time walking to school alone, or with his friends. In the years prior my little sister and he always walked to school together. Now, he gets access to a cell phone and freedom. It is a sad thing. I was like an overprotective parent this morning, getting them out to the bus, and ready. I took at least twenty pictures of them both and cried when my little sister walked up the steps onto the bus. It was so overwhelming.

But, school supplies, like everything else these days are getting very expensive, so it is best to stock up during the Back to School tax free sales, and purchase enough supplies for the years following. You can never buy enough notebooks, loose leaf paper, pencils, and pens. These items can be easily stored in a storage container until the following year. This way when they need more paper of pencils, they do not have to be bought when the prices increase right after the start of school.

I have never seen so many residential moving companies in my entire life. Driving around the St. Louis area it seems as if everyone is moving. There are so many different company moving trucks it is amazing. They are everywhere, but I have yet to see a person actually moving into a house. I am guessing it is still very difficult to finance a home nowadays, because there have been numerous foreclosures in the area in which I am currently residing. However, I have found many for sale sign throughout residential areas that have been in the same yards for months, or since I have been in town. Now isn’t that ironic, that people are moving but there are for sale signs posted everywhere. I just hope times will change and the country will arise out of this recession. Where are all of these people moving? I figure since that the housing market is so appalling everyone is renting out apartments, small housing, and duplexes.

Long distant moving is hard especially if you do not have a job in the city you are planning to move to. Since I have relocated about three months ago I have spent hours and hours applying for jobs and have found nothing thus far. It is very discouraging considering before I moved I had everything together, including a job, and extra money to spend anyway I like. Even without a degree I could pay bills, buy groceries and money left to spend. Now, money is tight, and bills are pilling up knee deep. This is with a double major bachelor. Hopefully, something comes through, but my advice to anyone undergoing a long distant move is to have your self storage, job, house, and a bank account set up prior to moving to a different city. It will save you money, time, and some sanity. You will not feel as lost and be as poor as others who did not have a plan before they left. And always save money.  If the move is sporadic then, take your time getting adjusted and moved into your new place. Find something comfortable and affordable that way you can pay for it even if you cannot find a job immediately.

My family and I recently returned from a trip to Northbrook Illinois. We had a really good time, and I think this was the best trip we have ever been on. We did not fight, like we normally do, and everything was planned out, so there were not any long days where we did not know what we were going to do. My sister and I had our own apartment style condo that was adjacent to my parent’s condo. It was a one bedroom, but there was a couch that let out into a bed so everyone had their privacy. The only problem was that there was no personal storage in the condos. In my parent’s there was a small utility closet that was about 3x3, so luggage could not fit into it. In our room we figured that we would just put our luggage and bags under a table which was under an entertainment center, so it was hidden from view. I would suggest that the makers of the condo in which we were staying look into providing the residents with storage options for their luggage. If were staying longer than a week there would have been more problems, because I think we all had at least four large pieces of luggage a piece for a week. Yes we are prepared. Northbrook Illinois was very fun!

I enjoy watching HGTV because it gives me ideas on designing my future place. Women, do you remember before you got married and had kids how you dreamed your home and family would be? You dreamt of how many children, pets and acres of land you would have.  I am currently going through this girly phase. In addition, I would like to own my own landscaping and interior decorating business one of these days further down the road. It is just another one of my many dreams. Anyway, while watching HGTV the other day I realized what I could do with all of the items I have packed away to consolidate them into a smaller space. The storage solutions sections of a moving show suggesting building shelves inside the closet and using those vacuum bags for comforters, sweaters, and other items. They are pretty cheap and can be used more than once, so they will come in handy when I move into my new place. I recently built a shelf that hangs from the wall and stores books, and trinkets that were cluttering my room. It helped out a bit, but I still have to downsize my clutter a little bit more.

I have been pondering the idea lately of packing up and moving out of town for a while by myself. I know it may sound like a very irrational idea considering I just endured a 130 mile move, but I am tired of Missouri AKA Misery. Missouri is not that bad, but I love traveling. I want to visit every state in the U.S. and then travel around the world. The idea of buying an RV has been very appealing. I do realize that I would have to buy gas, food, and have to worry about the constant upkeep of the RV, but I am willing to do that. By living in an RV for a while I could clear my head and get away from everyone that is trying to interfere in my life. I am not sure if this is just a dream or goal quite yet, but I am looking into places to reside all over the U.S. RV storage is just so expensive I may just live in it. You have the freedom of going wherever you’d like at any given time, and can pull up to rivers and lakes to fish. I am a fisherwoman so that hobby I would love to do whenever I would like. Oh well! Just a thought.

Now that I do not have a job that I physically have to go to, I understand why stay at home moms have to find things to do for themselves and their children. I have to have some type of structure in my life, things to do, books to read, and places to go, while being on a tight schedule. It is very frustrating. Today, I got an oil change on my car and helped my mother look at boats. My entire family loves to fish, which we try to do at least twice a month and we want to do different types of fishing. My step father and mother have been looking mostly at pontoon boats, and deck boat which would be large enough for the family when depart on day long fishing trips. I reminded her that we would have to look into boat storage since the driveway and garage are always inhabited by three to four vehicles all the time. Hopefully, she takes my advice and looks into it, because customers have told me that it is always best to find boat and RV parking before renting. That way you do not have to go through the hassle of swiftly moving it because of county or city ordinances.

I know I talk about my family a lot, but it is because I am very close to them, but my dad is looking for a place to rent. He is a preacher and in search for a place to hold his church gatherings. Without excellent credit it is very difficult to buy or rent some type of storage warehouse. He has been searching for at least a year, and I think he has finally found a place that has an adequate amount of space to hold people. The only downfall is that in whatever place he finds we will have to work on it. None of the facilities are church ready, so we will have to put together and purchase pews, put down carpet and construct a pulpit. I am not sure how much work he is going to do himself, but he is not the most mobile man in the world. That is going to leave the majority of the work up to us (the kids). I do not mind working with the church by any means. I am actually the new child Sunday school teacher, which is awesome. I love kids, and this will provide experience and something to look forward to and plan every week.

Sometimes I think that renting is a waste of money. I was previously residing in an apartment and felt like the rent I was paying was not put to good use. Property management is a very vital job that should be taken seriously at all times, but the place where I used to rent was a joke. They expected everyone to pay their rent on time and follow their authoritarian rules, when the maintenance and security was not up to par. Although renting is a great alternative to actually buying, property management must give their renters a reason to rent with them. This is including storage, buildings, and housing. I was a wonderful renter, paid rent on time, very quiet and left the apartment in tip top shape. According to them it was not good enough. Oh well. I will research my next place to live before I just take someone’s word that a certain place is an excellent place to live. Do not get me wrong, I know my next place will be rented because that is all I can afford, but I have to make sure it is a reasonable price with tight security and maintenance that will be on call daily.

I love my family, but they do not listen to me and do weird things. For example my dad is the smartest man I know. He just graduated with his PhD, and is a preacher as well. When I was a kid I used to think he was the strongest man in the world. But the things he does sometimes does not make sense. My dad’s garage is filled with who knows what. There are a variety of things in there like my old toy box, lawn mowers that no longer work, a basket ball hoop, and more. I am also trying to convince him to let me clean it out, because I am tired of seeing it that way. It was been like that ever since I can remember. But, he is a person that does not like to throw away things that he may need. So I guess until I go over there and clean the garage it will stay like that. He will not get a storage unit because he says he has the garage, but complains he does not have enough room in the driveway for the cars. Ugh! Hopefully I can talk some sense into him too.

Today like many other days was a day of cleaning and reorganizing. Truthfully, I just finished getting rid of access junk in the room and it looks like a bedroom should, organized. While performing this task along with cleaning the open area of the basement I realized how important self storage is to a large family of six. There are boxes piled six high, and there is really no room to expand. My lovely mother assigned me the great duty of reorganizing the basement since I will be residing there for a few months. I attempted to explain to her that there is no way on earth the basement will looked finished if there are boxes, books, and totes everywhere. We need  a storage unit! There is not room in the garage since the truck and van are parked there and I do not believe they are anticipating a storage room being built. I have no idea what she would like me to do with everything. This is beyond frustrating, but I think I am winner her over with the storage idea. She just may cave. I just need to get a few more quotes on prices and sizes, and hopefully we can get a unit.

Moving your family and furniture from one area to another is extremely difficult and time consuming, but how hard do you think it would be to move your family to another region, while avoiding getting caught, or seen? This is a brief history lesson that will make you move not seem as bad. Picture yourself not packing boxes and bags with clothes and household goods, but with a small bag containing only the necessities. A few pieces of bread and salted meat, and a small container of water is all you have. You have four children, the youngest being only 8 months of age, and you must plan to travel from the state of Mississippi across the Ohio River on foot. You do not have the capabilities of a truck rental, or driving a vehicle. All you have is the North Star to guide you and your family to safety. There are hounds following the scent of your family and you can only travel at night when it is safe. You risk being hung, shot, or mauled by blood hounds that track your every scent. You trust no one, but God, and pray daily that no one catches a glimpse of you or any of your children. Remember this is done out of necessity. Thousands of African American endured this hardship for years, to gain a small piece of the freedom we have today. Now does your move seem as bad as this?

In this day in age there CD’s are used more than records because record players are harder to find and gain access to, however there are many artists and types music that can only be found on records. Take nostalgic blues music for example. Palmer Hayden, an African American artist, produced songs such as Midsummer Night in Harlem and Where’d You Git Them High Top Shoes, which discussed issues that African Americans dealt with during the early 1900’s. This music along with others focused primarily on the struggles that African Americans faced in expressing artistic talents during the Harlem Renaissance also known as the New Negro music. As you all may know, during this time, there was a Great Migration of African Americans to the Northern states not only to find jobs, but a safe place to inhabit and to express artistic talents that had been unappreciated for so long. In Harlem especially, African Americans felt that in this area they could come together to produce and show their art freely. In this time, Harlem became the area with the largest concentration of African Americans throughout history.  With racism and overt discrimination still being extremely rampant economic opportunities were rare. Like their white counterparts creative expression of art was an avenue available to all cultures. By obtaining records, books, and other works of art produced during this time period you learn to appreciate history more. If you have an opportunity, find some of these pieces of history, keep them safe. Maybe try putting them in storage when not in use.

While on vacation in Branson, we fished three out of the six days that we were in attendance. I never realized how much goes into freezing, cleaning and cooking fish after they are caught. As many may know, I take pleasure in the sport of fishing. Everything about it makes me tingle inside. The excitement of snagging a large mouth bass puts chills down my spine. Sorry, I was just thinking of earlier today. My father, stepmother and I went on the river bank early this morning expecting to rack up on the largemouth bass that we were catching a few days prior, however that was defiantly not the case. After six hours of trying a variety of lures, and bait we ended up with three small catfish, and about fifteen sunfish. This is in addition to the five bass and ten sunfish that we caught on the other days. After bringing them home, my father assigned the job of cleaning and storing the fish, however there was a dilemma. After removing all of the fish out of the freezing foam cooler, I decided to store them in a plastic zip lock bag until I was ready to clean them, but we did not have enough bags to store them all. What did I do? I rinsed the foam cooler out and restored them in that. After cleaning, cooking and devouring most of the fish there were still some remaining, so I ended up going to the grocery store to get more bags and froze them in the freezer. By the way, the fish was amazing. The moral of this story is to make sure you have a storage plan prior to going fishing.

Picture a person that five foot two inches driving down the highway in an 18 foot moving truck. I felt like an ant in that huge truck, but I was really driving it. When dropping it off, my mother could not believe I was driving it. She still thinks of me as her little girl. I wonder why that is. Parents never see their children grown up, always as the little precious babies that they were 22 years prior. It is slightly difficult for them to see them any differently and they always seem to throw it in your face that you are their baby. Mine is always saying, I changed you diaper and fed you, you are sill my baby. Do I look like a baby to you? This is what I would like to say, but would never dare to say such a thing. Anyway, back to the truck. Finding this truck was a difficult task. I originally wanted to rent a truck through another company, but it would have cost me twice as much. This prolonged my moved and made things a lot more difficult, but I found one, reserved it on a credit card and picked it up on the date. I think that the smartest thing to do when moving is to reserve a storage unit and truck at least two weeks in advance if possible. This makes things a lot smoother.

Traveling makes things fun but hectic, especially when you have just moved. After moving back to my hometown from living in a small city for four years I feel very overwhelmed. I have boxes, papers, books, and clothes all over my 7x10 room and on top are very heavy cluttered suitcases. While packing for my trip to Branson I realized that not only do I have to get some sort of personal storage, I also have to get reorganized. For this week I decided not to worry about the clutter in my room, and just have fun with my family in Branson, but the clutter effected my time here. While unpacking I do not have tops to bottles and other things that should have tops. I cannot find my shirt that is a match with my pants set, and my favorite hoes are nowhere to be found. When I get back, I have to make sure I fully unpack everything, organize and throw away things I do not need. I have too much to do. The condos that we are staying in are very roomy with lots of storage space. It has given me the idea of building a larger closet outside my room to house my clutter.

I just had to make a long distance move and I can tell you that long distance moves stink. They make you grouchy and irritated and wish that you can throw all of your items in the trash and just buy more. Ugh! Now that I released some frustration I can honestly say that it is very costly, time consuming, but if you enjoy the location that you would be residing it is all worth it in the end. I was moving back with my family so I was excited, but after a few days of family time I wished I never moved. Okay, I take that back. I am happy that I moved, but I would plan it a little better the next time. Hopefully, there is not a next time. I had to spend money on a truck and clean the apartment I lived in. After a full day of cleaning the landlord told me it was not clean enough and $50 of my deposit would have to be taken out for the carpet cleaning. She said that they would need to do that anyway, but I would not get that back. On top of that I then had to drive two hours to my current place of residence and unload in hot 98 degree weather. But now that I am finally settled after two moves I am happy and trying to get adjusted.
