Derek was convinced that there was no way he was going to be able to run his late fathers company. Dereks beloved dad had passed away quite unexpectedly from a serious bout of pneumonia. His father had not been in the best of health for many years. Regardless, his death had sent shock waves throughout his family, which reverberated throughout the community of individuals that Dereks father had served so well for so many years. Dereks dad owned over a dozen homes and storage units , which he had managed, maintained and rented out to tenants. He had been a busy man up until his illness. Derek had stepped in to help the moving rental truck business while his father was ill, but now, the prospect of him becoming the heir to the family business seemed daunting.

All of this was happening so fast. He and his new wife, Julia had just returned from their honeymoon in Costa Rica when his father first fell ill. After the funeral, and after several weeks of mourning his fathers loss, Derek began the difficult task of learning all that his father had known about running such a successful, community oriented business. Derek searched the Internet for property management classes that he could take in order to learn some of the skills that his father had known so well.

Property management classes were the only thing that was going to save Derek, at this point. After all, Derek really did not know the first thing about making a vacant house ready to become a home for a new family. Nor did he understand all of the laws in regards to zoning and other issues pertaining to the business. Property management classes would help him get a handle on all of the minute details that he would need to know in order to take his fathers esteemed place as the CEO of the family business.

The phone rang. Derek was jolted from his deep contemplation. It was his wife, Julia, asking if he was going to make it home for dinner tonight. She had ordered takeout from their favorite Italian Bistro uptown. Derek promised that he would do everything he could to get home soon, but he was stuck trying to find a local company or school that offered the property management classes that he needed to move forward in the business. Then, his fingers stumbled upon a link on the Internet. He clicked the link, which took him to exactly where he needed to be. There, before him on the screen, was a list of local area companies that offered the information that he was seeking.

Just a quick phone call later, and Derek had found himself enrolled in property management classes that would help him become more proficient at the business that his father had so unexpectedly left behind. Derek was concerned about his ability to follow in his fathers footsteps, but he was ready. He had the classes to help him. He had the support of his fathers entire community rallying around him, giving him the confidence that he needed to be able to manage the moving company . He also had his beloved wife, Julia, who meant everything to him, and who was tireless in her efforts to make sure that he felt supported by her as well.

Derek was exhausted. He had to stop for the day, knowing that he had accomplished much in his fathers stead, but that much more was needed if he were to ever become as professional as his father had been. Derek went home to his wife, where they shared a delicious Italian meal, along with a glass of fine red wine, toasting Dereks father and all that he had stood for.
